Re: Big Three plead for $34B from Congress

December 7, 2008 by autovinventhost

Americans must have the lowest IQ's in the world.

[quote CNNMoney] "Protesters briefly disrupted the hearing Thursday, chanting "the bailout is a sell-out!" and urging Congress to use money to help the poor and food banks, rather than the auto companies.

A CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll of nearly 1,100 Americans conducted earlier this week found 61% oppose a bailout, while only 36% support it. Even in the Midwest, home to most of the automakers' remaining plants, 53% of those polled opposed federal help." [end quote]

This is not a bailout. The big three aren't asking for free money, a blank check, like wallstreet. They are asking for a LOAN. That is money that will be paid back with interest.

These protesters are the ones looking for a handout, free money to help the poor. If these companies go under the number of poor people that need help will shoot up like this country has never seen before.

Loan the automakers the money.

Buy American made products to support this country's economy. Jobs will be created and there won't be a need for as much money to help the poor.

Re: Electric cars and the future of Detroit

December 7, 2008 by autovinventhost

Fuel efficient cars are great for around town, short distance driving but, Americans like to travel and they want to get to their destination fast. I don't see how an electric vehicle is going to satisfy this need. America will be dependent on oil for decades to come until the technology is developed that will give us cars and trucks that will get up and go and also go for days and weeks.

Re: Automakers' fourth-and-long plea

December 7, 2008 by autovinventhost

Honestly it needs to be done. If these companies go under it won't be just the people who work for the automakers that will lose their jobs, it will be all of the people who work for the suppliers, dealers and etc. Estimates are at 2-3 million jobs. Not only will this country spiral into chaos but there will be a loss of competition and the cost of vehicles will skyrocket.

Also, they aren't asking for free money. They are asking for a loan from the people of America. The American people need to support this country and do what needs to be done to keep our economy going.

Re: The Big 3 road trip to Washington

December 5, 2008 by autovinventhost

Oh Puleeaze! From one extreme to the other. These guys are acting like teenagers thumbing their noses at a parent. Why couldn't they just take a first class seat on a commercial flight? Grow up! If this is how they are running their businesses, then it is no wonder that they are in trouble.

On a side note, Nancy Pelosi (Dem - Speaker of the House)has a private jet (a big ole Boeing 757) that she uses for trips home. The cost? About $100,000 per trip.

Unbelievable.

Re: GM: Death of an American dream

November 29, 2008 by autovinventhost

From the sound of this article, GM is so deep into "old school" thinking that change is out of the question. This could be their downfall. The ability to change, to be lean and agile in response to consumer trends is the key to staying viable.

Re: Retired from GM: One worker's fears

November 29, 2008 by autovinventhost

If a finger needs to be pointed at someone, it should not be at the execs of the big three but at the greed of the union and it's members.

There are many companies (global fortune 500) out there that do not deal with unions and they have generous pension, 401K and insurance plans for their retirees that not only take care of the employee but also allow the company to make a profit and stay healthy for the future.

Re: Crisis on Dealer Row

November 29, 2008 by autovinventhost

If these car dealerships where more honest and didn't try to stick it to the consumer from every angle the minute the door opened, I might have some sympathy for them. But I haven’t met an honest one yet.

All I can say is, What you give out, is what you get back.

Re: Can people find out who the previous owner was by the VIN?

November 8, 2008 by autovinventhost

The short answer is No.

In 1994 Congress enacted the Drivers Privacy Protection Act which makes it unlawful for states to disclose the personal information of individuals that it has in its database.

There are exceptions. They are called Permissible Uses. Those are:

•For use by any requester, if the requester demonstrates it has obtained the written consent of the individual to whom the information pertains.
•For use by an employer or its agent or insurer to obtain or verify information relating to a holder of a commercial drivers license that is required under the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 (49 U.S.C. App. 2710 et seq.)
•For use by any insurer or insurance support organization, or by a self-insured entity, or its agents, employees, or contractors, in connection with claims investigation activities, antifraud activities, rating or underwriting.
•For use by any government agency, including any court or law enforcement agency, in carrying out its functions, or any private person or entity acting on behalf of a Federal, State, or local agency in carrying out its functions.
•For use in connection with matters of motor vehicle or driver safety and theft; motor vehicle emissions; motor vehicle product alterations, recalls, or advisories; performance monitoring of motor vehicles, motor vehicle parts and dealers, motor vehicle market research activities, including survey research; and removal of non-owner records from the original owner records of motor vehicle manufacturers.
•For use in connection with any civil, criminal, administrative, or arbitral proceeding in any Federal, State, or local court or agency or before any self-regulatory body, including the service of process, investigation in anticipation of litigation, and the execution or enforcement of judgments and orders, or pursuant to an order of a Federal, State, or local court.
•For use in providing notice to the owners of towed or impounded vehicles.
•For use in connection with the operation of private toll transportation facilities.
