Hybrid and electric cars play a big part in the business plans Detroit automakers presented to Congress on Tuesday. The only problem is that vehicles like General Motors' Chevrolet Volt, won't be profitable for a decade or more.

Fuel efficient cars are great for around town, short distance driving but, Americans like to travel and they want to get to their destination fast. I don't see how an electric vehicle is going to satisfy this need. America will be dependent on oil for decades to come until the technology is developed that will give us cars and trucks that will get up and go and also go for days and weeks.
